Slot Receiver Nfl 2019
In the 2019 regular and postseason, per Pro Football Focus data, slot receivers regardless of position (receivers, running backs, and tight ends) accounted for 32% of all targets, 31.6% of all. McCaffrey entered the NFL in 2017 and has never failed to put up over 1,000 yards from scrimmage (as of 2020) in fact, in 2019 he totaled a thousand yards running and a thousand yards receiving, with a lot of those receiving yards coming from the slot back position McCaffrey is a peculiar example, because most slot backs are not expected to get.
Jamison Crowder proved to be the most important offensive player for the Jets in 2019. He quickly became a favorite target of Sam Darnold’s and finished the year with a team-high in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.
Whether it was a combination of game script, scheme or a lack of protection, Darnold loved throwing the ball Crowder’s way. The wideout owned a 24.8 percent target share, 11th-highest in the league in 2019, and he made the most of it.
Crowder’s ability in the slot made him even more valuable, though, and his production ranked among the best in the NFL at the receiver position. Adam Gase used Crowder the best of the Jets’ skill position players. Crowder ran 70 percent of his 802 offensive snaps out of the slot in 2019 and caught 58 balls from the slot, which ranked fourth in the league behind only Larry Fitzgerald, Cooper Kupp and Julian Edelman, according to Pro Football Focus. His five touchdowns and 648 yards out of the slot also ranked fifth and ninth in the league, respectively.
Nfl Standings 2019-2020 Season
Crowder wasn’t just a great slot receiver, he was also the Jets’ best red zone receiver as well. He led the team with 15 targets, which accounted for 30.6 percent of the Jets’ targets inside the 20-yard line, which ranked 20th in the league. All six of his touchdowns came in the red zone as well, including this beauty against the Ravens that had a 24 percent completion probability, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
Crowder’s success is, sadly, a direct result of the Jets’ inept offense. New York ranked 28th in yards per completion with 10.7, which is coincidentally Crowder’s yards per completion total as well. The Jets also finished dead last with only 33 red zone attempts, meaning the Jets leaned on their slot receiver more inside the 20.
The signing of Crowder during the 2018 offseason came with little fanfare, but the production far outweighed the rest of that free agency class. Another year with Darnold and Gase should help Crowder build on his solid 2019 campaign, especially after Joe Douglas fortified the offensive line – which should help Le’Veon Bell – and brought in two speedy outside receivers in Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims.
Regardless of the improvements on offense and the development of Darnold, the Jets will likely lean on Crowder once more in 2020 amid all of the uncertainty around the influx of talent. It will be hard to gauge how much better this team will be this season without a full offseason, but Crowder’s presence should ease concerns given his easy inclusion in Gase’s offense with Darnold at the helm. A healthy quarterback and stable offensive line should only make things easier for Crowder and the Jets, and their slot production could see a spike in efficiency even if the stats don’t increase.
There are a few big-name running backs available, but the wide receiver position is almost the opposite. There are a few guys who may be 1B type receivers, but there is no true 1A available. That could lead to some bad contracts for teams that are desperate for playmakers outside the numbers. Let’s get right to our rankings.
The definition of a 1B receiver, Tate went from super underrated to talked about so much he was properly rated to the savior of the Eagles — for some — to the free agency market. Tate can still pick up yards after the catch. He’s a solid veteran who can help a contender. This is probably his last shot at a big contract so he should be looking to cash in if he’s going to sacrifice winning.
Funchess is coming off his rookie deal and he should be looking to cash in. He’s not an All-Pro level receiver, but he has the physical makeup to succeed as a bigger possession wide receiver. He’s never going to be a 1A, but he’s a solid 1B and he’s young so he can improve. He can be frustrating and has been since he played at Michigan. Fans always feel like he can do a bit more. Going to a place with set expectations would help Funchess, or he can hang around Carolina since he knows the system and the Panthers don’t exactly have great depth at receiver.
Who needs a burner wide receiver who can stretch the field? Brown showed this year that he can provide that skillset still. Brown may not fit as well with the Ravens now that they are switching to a more running base offensive scheme. Brown is a good complementary wide receiver. He’s not a starter. He’s best when he can use his speed against opposing defensive backfields.
Crowder is a solid slot receiver if he can stay healthy. He’s young and coming off a rookie contract. He supposedly wants to stay in Washington, but there might be better spots for him to showcase his talent.
The Chargers need to move on from Tyrell Williams so they can play more Mike Williams. Their skills are kind of duplicative and the Mike version has a much higher upside. Tyrell always seemed to have a drop in a big spot. He is big. He can stretch the field. Someone is going to give him way too much money.
We are moving to on to the quick hits since the big names are kind of done now. Can someone please give Dorsett a role? He was great when he was actually targeted in New England, which was rare.
Cobb should probably just figure out a way to return to Green Bay. He may be at the tail end of his career.
Bring Moncrief back from his time in witness protection in Jacksonville.

Humphries is going to end up in New England and become their new slot receiver who puts up numbers, isn’t he?
He should stay in New England. They know how to use his versatility.

Beasley is a slot receiver who needs a change of scenery . . . or maybe he doesn’t need a change of scenery and he was overrated just because he plays in Dallas.
