Compulsive gambling is a progressive illness that is both diagnosable and treatable. There are a number of things that can be indicative of the fact that someone may be struggling with an addiction to gambling. Examples of such signs can include the following:

  • Having a preoccupation with gambling to the point where it incessantly consumes a person’s thoughts
  • Consistently needing to gamble with higher amounts of money in order to achieve the same excitement that one desires
  • Using gambling as a means of escaping from one’s problems or negative emotions
  • Placing gambling as a priority over other things
  • Withdrawing from friends and family in favor of spending time gambling
  • Consistently lying to friends, family members, and employers
  • Making unsuccessful efforts to cut back on or stop gambling
  • Committing illegal acts, such as fraud, theft, forgery, or embezzlement, in order to finance one’s gambling habit
  • After losing money from gambling, will return another day in order to “get even” – this is known as chasing and is a behavioral pattern often seen in pathological gamblers
  • Experiencing negative circumstances in one’s home, social, or occupational life as a result of gambling
  • Frequently relying on others to help bail him or her out of poor financial situations
  • Becoming restless or irritable when unable to gamble
